## 5 signs your business could benefit from a freelancer

You’ve got a business to run, customers to look after, invoices to chase, and somewhere on that never-ending to-do list sits ‘sort out the marketing’.

Perhaps you’ve been meaning to update your website for six months. Your last blog was published when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister. And you know you *should* be doing something about SEO, but where do you even start?

Sound familiar?

For many small and medium sized businesses, the problem isn’t a lack of ideas or ambition. It’s finding the time, expertise, and headspace to actually do something with them.

Having spent more than 20 years working in marketing, both in-house and now as a freelancer, I’ve seen how easily marketing becomes a long list of things everyone agrees are important, but nobody quite has time to tackle.

### **So, how do you know when it’s time to bring in some help?**

**1. You’re doing lots of marketing, but aren’t sure what’s working**

You’re posting on LinkedIn, sending emails, updating your website, and perhaps running the odd campaign. But which of those activities is actually bringing in business?

I’ve always been a big believer in doing less, better. Although I’ll be the first to admit, that’s sometimes easier said than done! Being busy with marketing isn’t quite the same as getting results from it.

Sometimes what you need isn’t someone doing more marketing. It’s someone who can take a step back, look at what you’re doing, and help you work out where to focus your efforts.

A clearer strategy, a few sensible priorities, and a way to measure what’s working can make a big difference.

**2. Your business has grown, but your marketing hasn’t kept up**

Your business has moved on, but your website is still happily living in 2020.

Perhaps you’ve introduced new services, started working with different customers, or changed direction altogether. But your messaging, website, and marketing materials haven’t quite caught up.

I’ve worked on several brand and website projects, and one thing I’ve found is how valuable an outside perspective can be.

When you’re immersed in a business every day, it’s easy to get used to the way things have always been done (or described). Someone coming in fresh can ask the obvious questions, challenge a few assumptions, and help make sure your marketing reflects the business you are today, not the one you were five years ago.

**3. That important marketing project never quite gets started**

You know the one. The website refresh, new campaign, content overhaul, or brand messaging project that’s been on the agenda for months. Everyone agrees it needs doing, but there’s always something more urgent, and somehow it never quite makes it to the top of the list.

This is where bringing in a freelancer for a specific project can really help. Having worked on projects both in-house and as a freelancer, I’ve found there’s a real advantage to being able to focus on one piece of work without getting pulled into everything else happening across the business.

A freelancer can bring some dedicated time, structure, and momentum to a project, helping you finally get it over the finish line.

**4. You know what needs doing, but don’t have the skills in-house**

You might have a brilliant team, but that doesn’t mean they can do everything. Marketing covers a lot of different areas, and being good at one part of it doesn’t automatically make you an expert in another.

SEO, messaging, copywriting, analytics, and website optimisation all require different skills, and that’s just getting started. Sometimes you just need someone with a particular area of expertise to come in, tackle a problem, or get a project delivered.

A freelancer can help fill that gap without the commitment of recruiting someone permanently.

**5. Your marketing feels a bit all over the place**

Your website says one thing, your sales materials say another, and your social media has developed a personality of its own.

It’s easily done, particularly as businesses grow and different people become involved in marketing. But when your messaging, content, and activities aren’t working together, it becomes harder for customers to understand what you offer and why they should choose you.

Sometimes it takes someone who hasn’t been living and breathing your business to ask the obvious questions and help bring the different pieces together. That might mean reviewing your messaging, agreeing some priorities, or creating a more joined-up marketing plan.

Nothing unnecessarily complicated, just a clearer direction and a bit more consistency.

### **But is hiring a freelancer always the answer?**

Not necessarily! And I say that as someone who makes a living from freelancing.

Having worked in-house, managed teams, and worked with agencies, I know there are benefits to different approaches.

If you need someone embedded in your business every day, a permanent or interim employee might make more sense. If you need a whole team of specialists working across lots of different areas, an agency could be a better fit.

And sometimes you don’t need to hire anyone at all. You might just need to simplify what you’re doing or make better use of the resources you already have.

**The important thing is understanding what you actually need before deciding who should do it.**

Do you need someone to help you work out your marketing strategy and priorities? A specialist to tackle a particular challenge? Or someone who can roll up their sleeves and get things done?

Different freelancers bring different skills and experience, so it’s worth being clear about what you’re looking for. [Find out more about how freelancers can make a difference to your business.](https://www.breakercommunications.co.uk/blog/rethinking-marketing-support-beyond-the-full-time-hire)

### **So, what should you look for in a freelance marketer?**

I’d start with someone who takes the time to understand your business, asks good questions, and has experience that’s relevant to what you need.

They should be clear about what they can help with, what they’ll deliver, and how you’ll work together. And perhaps more importantly, I’d look for someone who’s prepared to challenge your thinking when needed.

A good freelancer shouldn’t simply agree to everything on your wish list, they should help you work out what’s worth doing in the first place.

### **You don’t have to do everything yourself**

If you’ve recognised your business in a few of these signs, perhaps it’s time to think about getting some help.

That doesn’t have to mean a huge budget, a complicated marketing strategy, or handing everything over to someone else.

Sometimes it simply means having someone who can help you work out what matters, focus your efforts, and actually get things done.

And perhaps finally cross a few things off that never-ending to-do list.
